Startling reports have identified that obesity in Canadian children has almost tripled in the last 30 years. What’s more frightening is that over 30% of Canadian children are considered to be overweight! It’s our responsibility as parents to educate the younger generation to stay fit, eat healthy and take care of their bodies to avoid future illness and long term physical and psychological side effects.
What can you do?
- Limit the use of computers or TVs and instead encourage physical activity (a minimum of 60 minutes per day).
- Eat healthy snacks like nuts and fruit. Avoid drinks high in sugar such as sports beverages and pop.
- Drink a lot of water!
- Cook meals with your children using non-fatty meats, a lot of vegetables and other nutritional foods identified in the Canada Food Guide
What can this help avoid?
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure or heart disease
- Cancer
- Sleeping problems
- Low self esteem and a negative body image
- Depression and mood swings
As Canadian TV personalities Joanne McLeod and Hal Johnson from Body Break say, “Keep Fit and have Fun!”
