Medical expenses to claim when filing taxes in Canada

Many people are unaware of what medical expenses they can claim to help reduce potential payments when filing taxes in Canada. The general idea is that only prescription drugs not covered by your health insurance plan are eligible, but this is not the only case!

For example, did you know that individuals who are required to eat gluten-free products could claim the difference paid between a regular and gluten-fee food item? However, it’s important to receive a note from one’s doctor stating that the person has celiac disease and has no choice but to eat gluten-free. Also, a summary of all items purchased as well as all grocery receipts must be kept for proof.

Other medical expenses that can be claimed include orthodontic services for non-cosmetic purposes, prenatal and postnatal treatments for pregnant women and certain renovation or construction expenses related to a disability or injury.

Be informed! Visit the Canada Revenue Agency for a detailed list of what medical expenses can and cannot be claimed when filing your taxes.
